IND vs AFG: India Reach Asian Games 2026 Semi-Final After Afghanistan Quarter-Final Washed Out

India have reached the men's cricket semi-final at the 2026 Asian Games after their quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned because of persistent rain in Nisshin, Japan.

The India vs Afghanistan quarter-final was scheduled to take place at Korogi Sports Park on September 28, 2026, but continuous rain prevented the match from starting. The game was eventually abandoned without a toss and without a ball being bowled.

Under the tournament's progression rules for a washed-out knockout match, India advanced because they entered the quarter-final as the higher-ranked team. India are ranked No. 1 in the ICC men's T20I rankings, while Afghanistan are ranked 10th.

India vs Afghanistan Match Abandoned Due to Rain

The quarter-final was scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM IST, with the toss planned for 10:00 AM.

However, persistent rain in the Nagoya/Nisshin area made conditions unsuitable for play. The ground remained unplayable and there was no opportunity to begin the match.

Eventually, officials called off the fixture without a single delivery being bowled.

That means there was no batting score, bowling figure or match scorecard result from the India-Afghanistan quarter-final.

Why Did India Qualify for the Semi-Final?

The key reason is the tournament's knockout progression rule.

When the quarter-final could not produce a result, the higher-ranked team advanced. India entered the match ranked above Afghanistan in the ICC men's T20I rankings.

India were ranked No. 1, while Afghanistan were ranked No. 10. As a result, India progressed to the semi-final after the match was abandoned.

This is therefore not an India victory in the conventional sense. India did not defeat Afghanistan on the field because no ball was bowled.

Instead, India advanced because of the competition's rules following the washout.

No Toss and No Ball Bowled

The rain affected the match from the beginning.

The India-Afghanistan quarter-final was called off without a toss, meaning neither team got an opportunity to bat or bowl.

The same weather problem had already affected the other men's cricket quarter-final earlier in the day, with Pakistan advancing after the Pakistan vs Hong Kong, China match was also abandoned because of rain.

India's Asian Games Cricket Campaign

India entered the men's cricket competition at the quarter-final stage as one of the seeded teams.

The Olympic Council of Asia had previously confirmed that defending champions India were among the teams seeded directly into the knockout stage. The men's tournament is being played in the T20 format at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

The BCCI had named Shreyas Iyer as India's captain for the 2026 Asian Games squad. The squad also includes players such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

India Will Now Play in the Semi-Final

With Afghanistan eliminated from the men's cricket competition, India move into the semi-final.

According to current tournament reporting, India will face the winner of the Sri Lanka vs Nepal quarter-final in the semi-final. Pakistan will face the winner of Bangladesh vs Malaysia on the other side of the draw.

The men's cricket semi-finals are scheduled for October 1, with the final scheduled for October 3.

What Does the IND vs AFG Result Mean?

The match was abandoned because of rain, and India advanced to the semi-final under the tournament's higher-ranking rule.

So the accurate match status is:

India vs Afghanistan — Match Abandoned

Result: No result

Balls bowled: 0

India: Advanced to semi-final

Afghanistan: Eliminated

Reason: Match abandoned due to rain; India progressed as the higher-ranked team.
